HIKE EVENT: In search of imperiled golden-winged warbler

Part of the free Get Outdoors Poconos series

Saturday, May 5, 2018 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Brodhead Watershed Association

On private land in the northern part of Monroe County, Pa., stands a messy tangle of shrubs in open woodland. To the golden-winged warblers returning from Latin America in May and looking for a place to nest, this mess means home.

On Saturday, May 5, Brodhead Watershed Association will host a “walk and talk” about the imperiled golden-winged warbler, a tiny bird that looks a bit like a chickadee dressed for a party.

After a discussion at Barrett Paradise Friendly Library with experts on the bird, a guided hike will explore private property and show how landowners can help protect the warbler, which is at risk because of lack of habitat.

Hikers will see how the property owners re-established missing habitat – a patchwork of scrubby, low vegetation for nesting and raising young, combined with mature forest and dense thickets for food and cover.

The 2.4-mile trail is often steep, but wide and grassy. Along the way, hikers might see evidence of other wild residents, including coyotes and red-tailed hawks. The trail offers another treat: an extensive, exhilarating view in all directions.

WHAT: Golden-winged warbler expert Dr. Jeff Larkin will talk about what this beautiful bird needs to survive. He and other experts will provide context and then lead a hike of about 2.4 miles on private land. The trail is wide and grassy, although very steep for long stretches. Walking stick recommended.

WHEN: 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018

WHERE: Meet at Barrett Paradise Friendly Library, 6500 Route 191, Cresco, for Dr. Larkin’s talk. Directions will provided to the hike meeting place. Note: The landowner has generously allowed us to hike this property to see the golden-wing restoration project in progress. The property is not otherwise open to the public.

COST: Free, but registration is required.
